No Child Left Behind
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was enacted on January 8, 2002, to provide stronger accountability in America’s schools. It strives to ensure that all students, regardless of economic or social disadvantages, achieve academic proficiency.

Under this bill, NCLB requires school districts to provide annual report cards to inform parents about state and school progress. Provisions under the bill permit high-performing states and school districts the flexibility to determine how to best use federal education funds – from Title I programs to technology upgrades to hiring new teachers. It allows parents of students in low-performing schools to transfer their children to higher-performing public schools. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on reading, particularly in early childhood education programs.

Because education assessments play such a key role in accountability, DRC has developed an internal consulting group to monitor the laws and regulations surrounding the NCLB Act. The NCLB council provides technical consulting and a national perspective to complex state assessment and accountability issues.
